Catching the Perfect Wave in San Luis Obispo

Dana Whitney and Henry Murphy, two freshmen at Cal Poly, first became friends over their avid love for surfing. The two spend almost every day surfing the waters surrounding San Luis Obispo and are frequently on the lookout for new spots to paddle into.

Whitney, a Santa Barbara native, grew up surfing with his family and has always found great peace of mind in the saltwater.

“My mom has always said that the water is her religion,” Whitney said. “Coming to SLO was the best decision for me, because it’s so similar to home and no matter how I’m feeling that day, I could just spend hours out there and know that it’s all going to be okay.”

Originally from Oregon, Murphy started surfing recently, and his passion for the sport has only grown since moving to SLO. Beaches like Sandspit and Pismo are the most popular among the two boys, and they expressed their gratitude for the accessibility of the coastlines to campus.

“It’s just always such a great time,” Murphy said. “Hanging with all my buddies out there is honestly all I could ask for, and I’ve met some really great people through the sport.”
